The operating system on Apple computers started out being called Mac OS X, when in the year 2000 they switched to the 10th version. “Codenames” were then a collection of various “cats”, starting with Cheetah and ending at version 10.8 with “Mountain Lion”.
At version 10.8, the system changed its name to OS X, and from version 10.12 to macOS, thus dropping the “X”.
As something new in version 10.15 Catalina, it is pure 64 bit, which means that users who upgrade their machines may find that old programs no longer work. Especially e.g. Microsoft Office or various Adobe programs if they are the old 32 bit versions.
If you don’t want to downgrade to Mojave or earlier, you will have to buy new versions of Microsoft Office, Adobe, or other old programs that can no longer run.
